HEAL and CHEM Trust hosted a high-level conference on the much-needed REACH revision, bringing together EU and national policymakers, scientific experts, civil society organisations and representatives of industry and health groups.
200 participants gathered to discuss tools such as the Mixture Assessment Factor, the registration of polymers, and the extension of the fast-track restriction procedure for the most harmful chemicals.
They welcomed Environment Commissioner Jessica Roswall, who promised to achieve this revision. “The REACH revision is essential and we are working hard to get there, but it needs a strong foundation, and strong evidence base, and we are ready to do whatever it takes to deliver that”. Many speakers and participants agreed that REACH needed to be simplified and modernised.
Health journalist Sue Saville closed the event with the following summary: Europeans are currently not safe; sorting out the chemical crisis is an investment, not a cost; and a REACH revision is essential to protect people and ensure the European chemicals industry is not the cheapest globally, but the best.
